I carried the "Mean Girls" theme through the "on Wednesdays we wear pink" chicken with the sunglasses and handbag to push the goofy aspect of it all. It is a 9x14 inch print, printed with acrylic water-based inks. I used the method of direct screen printing, meaning that I directly applied screen blocker onto the screen to create a layer system for each color printed. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/616c5b29d2cc753c6b3e9630/1634593346752-GQXH6KMNE1FNA5E06KV0/IMG_3343.JPG Printmaking - Shitty Dad This print is a little different in that I used the indirect screen printing method. This method of screen printing uses emulsion to burn the image into the screen so that the ink can then pass through onto the paper. I used a combination of direct and indirect printing for this piece in order to get the crisp details through indirect and the larger shapes through direct. I based this piece on my childhood and family more so than my previous works. I drew on my Hispanic background and issues with my father. I focused on the overall piece rather than on just getting a laugh. This is actually quite a small print. It is 5x5.5 inches. Intaglio printing involves etching a copper plate with ferric chloride acid. I was very concerned about this part but after getting the hang it, it was a lot easier and more straight forward than I was expecting. Intaglio is a type of printmaking where you etch your design into a plate and all the ink remains in the grooves you create. You then wipe off the excess ink and use damp paper so that it only picks up the ink within those grooves. Through the ideation process used, I ended up with the prompt "Warm, Peaceful Summer Days Outside". My favorite in the summer activity is driving with my windows down while listening to music. I also really enjoy going to car shows with my step-dad. So I drew from that along with my love of plants and ended up with this design!
